Medical Assistant
New Associate Degree in Applied Sciences

Medical Assistants are multi-skilled highly trained professionals that accomplish administrative and clinical duties in helping doctors and other licensed professionals. As versatile and dedicated members of the medical team, medical assistants are viewed as crucial individuals in improving the productivity and the services of medical facilities. Medical assistants perform many clinical duties including taking medical histories and recording vital signs, preparing patients for examination, and assisting the physician during the examination. They collect and prepare laboratory specimens or perform basic laboratory tests on the premises, sterilize medical instruments. and assist in minor surgical procedures. The administrative duties include answering telephones, updating and filing patients’ medical records, filling out insurance forms, handling correspondence, scheduling appointments, arranging for hospital admission and laboratory services.

Health care added 31,000 jobs in December 2006. The profession is the fastest growing profession in the actual job market and is expected to increase steadily to more than 36% until 2012.

Employment Opportunities

During the last years the job placement rate in the medical field at Bramson ORT College has been more than 80%. Many of our students are actually working in many medical offices (Pediatrics, OBGYN, General Surgery, Geriatrics, Rehabilitation Medicine, Ophthalmology, Podiatry and etc.), multi-specialty facilities and hospitals in Queens, Manhattan and Brooklyn. Other opportunities in the medical industry include Medical Diagnostic Laboratories, Research Centers, Blood Banks, Medical Insurance Companies, Care and Ambulatory Centers.

Program Description

The Bramson ORT Medical Assistant Program (Associate Degree in Applied Sciences) is a unique program based on sciences and hand-on training totally fulfilling the requirement of the industry. The science courses cover biology, anatomy, physiology, and medical terminology, as well as medical transcription, record keeping, accounting, insurance and billing procedures. Students learn laboratory techniques, clinical and diagnostic procedures, administering medications, and CPR/ First Aid. An internship course that provides practical experience in physicians’ offices, hospitals, and other health care facilities is required at the end of the program. Hand – picked internship sites are available, so that the students can fully utilize their acquired skills and be employed.
